2009 Defense/Special Teams Average Draft Position (ADP) PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Fantasy Football Blog
Written by Garth Gregor
Average Draft Position (ADP) analysis is a powerful tool for any competitive Fantasy Football owner. It is useful to see where players are drafted across leagues and formats on average. This allows owner’s to project when to select targeted players and come up with a preliminary draft strategy.

ADP information is based on Yahoo data through June 21. Mockdraftcentral.com is not used because on average, all Defense/Special Teams were selected outside of the top 100. This is because in mock drafts, owners are more patient and put off these selections.

Yahoo ADP data is more reliable in these roster spots as they are based on real drafts and owners who are anxious to lock down a top defense for 2009. The Defense/Special Teams have been targeted as either Buy (value exceeds ADP), Neutral (ADP is about right), and Sell (ADP is high considering risk).

altPittsburgh D/ST (ADP 56) This is much too early to take even this defensive powerhouse.

Playing in the weak AFC North, the Steelers still finished only third in defensive fantasy points scored.

Let someone else pick them early and focus on depth at the skill positions and handcuffing your top running backs. SELL

N.Y. Giants D/ST (ADP 62) Again, very early to select a defense. The Giants ranked ninth in fantasy points scored and they play in the tough NFC East. Be careful not to get involved in a run on elite defenses. Favorable weekly matchups and emerging defensive units can always be found during the season. SELL

Dallas D/ST (82) The Cowboys led the NFL in sacks last season with 59. This means they have the schemes and talent to get to the quarterback. Sacks and hurries result in bad decisions by the opposition and fantasy points for this squad. This would still be very early, on average they have been the seventh defense off yahoo and 11th of mockdraftcentral draft boards. NEUTRAL

Seattle D/ST (117) Looking to return to his monster 2006 and 2007 form, tight end Kellen Winslow was wise to get out of Cleveland. A week 1 matchup against Tampa Bay with their question marks at quarterback and running back will provide a great start for the Seahawks. Playing the 49ers in week 2 will not hurt their fantasy points scored either. BUY

New England D/ST (ADP 120) The Patriots were toward the bottom of the defensive rankings in 2008. Their offense should be putting pressure on their opponents all season allowing a strong pass rush. They have a favorable week 1 matchup at home against the Buffalo Bills who will be playing without starter running back Marshawn Lynch. Week 2 has potential as New England travels to the lowly N.Y. Jets. BUY
