2009 Linebacker Bums and Busts PDF Print E-mail
Fantasy Football Blog

You want to draft next year’s stars, not last year’s. This little bit of fantasy wisdom reveals its truth the most at Linebacker. Let other owners overdraft for star power. Meanwhile, you can keep drafting offensive players early and save your later picks for some even better LBs.

I’ll cover the guys you want to look for at the end of your draft in the next column. But first, here are the LBs you want to let be some other owner’s headache.

“Busts” are players who are pretty much done. They’ll keep playing for a few more years, and will most likely acquit themselves honorably on the field of real football. But anyone who grabs one of these players while reminiscing over their glory days will surely come to grief. If you own one of them, trade them before training camp opens, while they still have any value.

“Bums” are those players who will have you cursing the day their mammas were born as you lose a game by a whisker due to their sudden disappearance. They will still score fantasy points, but will be grossly overdrafted and eventually cursed out by their owners who had much higher expectations.

Shawne Merriman, Chargers – It’s so sad to write this, because before the knee injury Merriman was one of the most fearsome and entertaining players in the NFL. I just don’t see him ever coming back all the way after tearing two ligaments in his knee and then continuing to play on it.

The Chargers certainly are hedging their bets by drafting Larry English and signing free agent Kevin Burnett. There are so many players who could start in San Diego that I advise staying away from the entire situation until it sorts itself out. It’s possible Merriman could fully recover after another year, but in any case, relying on him in 2009 would be unwise.
