Fantasy Football Waiver Wire: Week Five Pickups PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Waiver Wire Pickups
Written by Garth Gregor
Fantasy Football's Week Five Waiver Wire Pickups are here! Many of these free agents have Week 5 starter potential or should be monitored closely as owners continue through NFL bye weeks. These players are available in the majority of standard ESPN and Yahoo leagues as of October 4th.

QUARTERBACKS

Derek Anderson, Cleveland Browns –
The Browns’ started Anderson for the first time this season and he performed well.   Coming off a three interception relief effort for Brady Quinn, Anderson threw for 269 yards, accounted for two touchdowns and limited his turnovers to just one. Anderson plays at Buffalo in week five before tough battles against Pittsburgh, Green Bay and Chicago and is available in 99% of ESPN leagues and 99% of Yahoo! leagues.

David Garrard, Jacksonville Jaguars
– Opposing defenses have focused on stopping Maurice Jones-Drew giving Garrard opportunities to make plays. He has been inconsistent in the first four games but has shown improvement. He threw for 323 yards and three touchdowns against a weak Titans’ secondary and faces the Seahawks in Seattle and the Rams at home in weeks 5 and 6. He has been sent to the waiver wire in recent weeks and makes a good start for a bye week. Garrard is available in 31% of ESPN leagues and 43% of Yahoo! leagues.

RUNNING BACKS

Rashard Mendenhall, Pittsburgh
– The second year running back touched the ball 31 times and totaled 191 yards and two scores against the Chargers. With Parker out with a toe injury it is hard to imagine Mendenhall ever returning to his backup role.   A mouth watering matchup against the Lions in week five should have the Mendenhall owned in all leagues and formats and he is currently available in 63% of ESPN leagues and 65% of Yahoo! leagues.

Jerome Harrison, Cleveland Browns
– Harrison has now had 55 touches in the past two games. With James Davis out for the season and Jamal Lewis banged up, Harrison could be the feature back going forward. Cleveland was able to move the ball with Derek Anderson under center giving Harrison a fighting chance running the ball and as a receiver out of the backfield. He posted a strong 152 total yards against the Bengals in week four. Harrison is available in 98% of ESPN leagues and 79% of Yahoo! leagues so he stays on the waiver list this week.

Ricky Williams, Miami Dolphins
– Williams is involved in the Miami offense and is making the most of his opportunities. He has now scored in two straight games and has been used as a receiver out of the backfield. Miami has a week five matchup against the Jets before going into a bye week. Williams is available in 71% of ESPN leagues and 49% of Yahoo! leagues.

WIDE RECEIVERS

Mike Sims-Walker, Jacksonville Jaguars –
The Jaguars primary receiver now has 19 catches, 278 yards and three scores in his last three games. The second year player has great matchups against Seattle and St. Louis coming up and should be owned in all leagues. He is currently available in 62% of ESPN leagues and 46% of Yahoo! leagues.

Austin Collie, Indianapolis Colts
– Collie got his first touchdown of the season in week four to go along with six receptions and 65 yards. Peyton Manning has been spreading the ball around well and Indianapolis has a favorable week five matchup against Tennessee. The rookie out of Brigham Young is available in almost all leagues.

Kenny Britt, Tennessee Titans –
The rookie out of Rutgers has quietly posted 271 receiving yards in his first four games. He has not connected with Collins for a touchdown yet which is why he is flying under the fantasy football radar but he has big play potential. The Titans will be playing catch up against the Colts in week five which should give Britt a few extra looks. Britt is available in 91% of ESPN leagues and 89% of Yahoo! leagues.

TIGHT ENDS

Brent Celek, Philadelphia Eagles –
With a week five bye week, Celek is still available in many leagues. Celek has 22 catches, 255 yards and two scores in just three games and has played well with both Kolb and McNabb. Celek has been on the waiver list every week and is still available in 43% of ESPN leagues and 31% of Yahoo! leagues.

Heath Miller, Pittsburgh Steelers
– Miller’s value has mainly been in PPR leagues until a week four explosion on Sunday Night Football. Miller caught eight passes for 70 yards and two scores. Week five Miller has a good matchup against the Detroit Lions and makes a strong start filling in on a bye week. Miller is available in 88% of ESPN leagues and 36% of Yahoo! leagues.

DEFENSE/SPECIAL TEAMS

Indianapolis
Colts – The Colts are alive recording nine sacks and forcing five turnovers in the past two weeks. They face a Titans offense in Week Five that has had trouble protecting the ball and Peyton Manning should keep the pressure on them as he puts points on the scoreboard. Indianapolis is available in 86% of ESPN leagues and 73% of Yahoo! leagues.

Dallas
Cowboys – This defensive squad is slowly improving. They allowed 54 points in their first two games and only 24 points in their last two games. The Cowboys face a lousy Chiefs' offense in Week Five. The Cowboys led the NFL in sacks in 2008 and should be able to pressure the quarterback. Dallas is available in 77% of ESPN leagues and 31% of Yahoo! leagues.

KICKERS

Josh Scobee, Jacksonville Jaguars –
Scobee hit three field goals including one from 50 yards and added four PATs against the Titans in week four. The Jaguars offense will stay on track in Seattle in week five and at home against St. Louis in week six. Scobee is available in 98% of ESPN leagues and 96% of Yahoo! leagues.

Adam Vinatieri, Indianapolis Colts –
The Colts' offense is firing on all cylinders giving the kicker a few more opportunities each week. Vinatieri connected on five field goals and 11 PATs in his last three games and will continue this pace against the Titans in Week Five. This placekicker is available in 72% of ESPN leagues and 86% of Yahoo! leagues.

Who else is available in the majority of leagues and has the potential to be this year’s fantasy sleeper? Check back weekly for waiver wire updates.
