Netminder Notes - ADDS, DUMPS, and DEALS PDF  | Print |  E-mail
NetMinder Notes
Written by Jesse Mendelson
We’re in Week 3 of the NHL season, and things haven’t really calmed down on offense. It seems like there’s at least one game every night with 5 goals, or a goalie getting pulled, or a top goalie sucking again. So what to make of this mess? Herewith, a list of Adds, Dumps and Deals to target for the short term.

ADDS

Scott Clemmensen, FLA – A lot of people drafted Thomas Vokoun to be their goalie, and I was one of them. Vokoun is still the unquestioned starter, but after a great opening game, he has been atrocious. Clemmensen, who played very well last year as Marty Brodeur’s backup, is the #2 for the Panthers, and could easily steal starts if Vokoun continues to struggle.
Antero Nittymaki, TB – See Clemmemsen, Scott. #1 Mike Smith has been horrible, and Nittymaki has both of the team’s wins (his weekend loss to the unstoppable Penguins notwithstanding). Smith is hardly entrenched in Tampa; Nittymaki could supplant him, no matter what Coach Tocchet says.
Ty Conklin, STL – As I’ve mentioned before, Conklin is worth keeping an eye on, because the perennial backup always finds a way to play, and play well. After backing up Marc-Andre Fleury and Chris Osgood the past two seasons, he’s playing behind Chris Mason in St. Louis. He’s not the starter, but he does have 2 wins in 2 starts, a GAA of 1.50 and a .949 save pct.
Ondrej Pevelec, ATL – Pevelec isn’t going to go quietly into this good night once injured starter Kari Lehtonen comes back. He’s got 3 wins, 123 saves and a GAA of 2.76. Not spectacular numbers, but worth owning and still under the radar.

DUMPS

Jose Theodore, WAS – I’ve been trumpeting the less-than-usefulness of Jose Theodore for a month now, and the early going has given me no reason to think otherwise. He’s only got one win, is out with back spasms and though has two more starts than Semyon Varlamov, its only a matter of time until he becomes a backup. Not worth much.
Brent Johnson, PIT – Until Marc-Andre Fleury’s inevitable mid-season injury, Johnson is not worth a roster spot right now.

DEALS

Craig Anderson, COL – I’m not quite ready to jump on the Anderson – and the Avalanche’s – bandwagon. It’s a very long season, and his numbers only have one way to go, and that’s down. While you can trumpet him as the second best goalie in the league, deal him for some star power and a struggling guy like Niklas Backstrom or Roberto Luongo or Tim Thomas.
Ilya Bryzgalov, PHO – See Anderson, Craig. Shades of last year…Bryzgalov was outstanding in the first couple of months, and then tailed off precipitously. Trade him while he’s on top.
Niklas Backstrom, MIN/Roberto Luongo, VAN – Classic buy-low candidates. Top goalies from last year who have started poorly, as have their teams.  Backstrom should just thank his lucky stars than he isn’t on the Maple Leafs – the only team worse than his Wild. Luongo, on the other hand, just needs to stop more shots.  Go get them.
Marc-Andre Fleury, PIT – Another guy whose numbers lie a little bit. He won’t go 44-0, and you can expect his GAA to go up by at least half a goal. He’ll win a lot, but don’t get caught in the hype. You can get a king’s ransom for him right now.
