Titans WR Kenny Britt was having a solid rookie season but he exploded onto the national scene with a game-winning touchdown catch in Tennessee’s last-second win over Arizona, a highlight play that was shown approximately 10 million times over the past five days.

altWith WR Justin Gage out with a back injury, Titans rookie Kenny Britt has stepped into the limelight with back-to-back strong games. In Week 11 Britt had four catches, including a touchdown reception, in Tennessee’s 20-17 win over Houston on Monday Night Football. For an encore, Britt notched a career-high 128 yards receiving in Sunday’s dramatic win over Arizona, a game which Britt caught the winning TD pass as time expired.

Britt was the Titans’ first-round pick in the 2009 Draft, the 30th overall selection. The Bayonne, N.J. product opted to stay close to home and played collegiately at Rutgers. Since Greg Schiano took over the Scarlet Knights program, Rutgers football has become a big-time program. In the 1990s, only three Scarlet Knight players were drafted and only eight played in the NFL. But since Schiano arrived for the 2001 season, 24 players from Rutgers have made the leap to the NFL, including 11 draft picks.

Four Scarlet Knights players were taken in the 2009 Draft, with Britt being the top choice. He finished his college career as the all-time leading receiver in the Big East Conference with 3.043 yards in 34 games. Britt tied former Pitt Panther star Larry Fitzgerald’s conference record with 14 100-yard games. He also holds the school record with 17 touchdown catches.

As a junior Britt had 87 catches for 1,371 yards and 7 touchdowns. He also added 75 yards on the ground and one rushing score. Following an impressive bowl game performance, in which he had 119 yards receiving, including a 42-yard touchdown catch, Britt opted to go pro. He became just the second player from Rutgers to leave early for the NFL (Ray Rice was the first one year earlier) and the first ever Scarlet Knights product to be a first-round pick..

A strong preseason, combined with an early injury to Nate Washington, opened the doors for Britt to start the first game of the season. The Titans opened the season against the defending champion Steelers and Britt responded with a four-catch, 85-yard performance. He suffered an injury in Week 2, but bounced back with another four-catch effort the following week versus the Jets.

Britt enjoyed his first 100-yard game in Week 4 against the Jaguars, as he caught seven balls for 105 yards in a 37-17 loss. But fortunes changed for Britt after that game. The Titans struggled in their pass offense (they completed just two passes in a blowout loss to the Patriots) and then changed quarterbacks from Kerry Collins to Vince Young. But Britt found himself in the spotlight after the Gage injury.

In the Monday Night game, Britt caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Young in the second quarter to knot the score at 7-7. He ended the game with four catches for 42 yards. Then last week versus Arizona, Britt was a dual threat, as in addition to his personal-best receiving day, he also returned two kicks for 58 yards, including a 35-yard return.

But the play that made everyone take notice was the 10-yard touchdown reception on fourth down to win the game. It was the third catch on the drive for Britt and the second one in which he came up big on a fourth-down play. On the touchdown catch, Britt leaped high in the middle of the field and came down in traffic with the ball, which helped make up for an earlier fumble following a 51-yard pass-and-run play in the fourth quarter that seemingly sealed the Titans’ fate.

Britt was the sixth receiver selected in the 2009 Draft, but he has more reception yardage than either Darius Heyward-Bay or Michael Crabtree, the top two receivers picked. His ability to gain yards after the catch make him an attractive target and one that fantasy players will follow for many years to come.
