| In a Spring Training position battle, we most commonly see two players fighting over one job. It is quite an oddity when four players are competing for the same position. The latter is what is currently taking place in the camp of the Chicago White Sox. Manager Ozzie Guillen will have his hands full when it comes time to name the starting second baseman for his squad. However, he has a talented group of players to choose from. Chris Getz, Brent Lillibridge, Jayson Nix, and hot prospect Gordon Beckham are all battling for the same job this Spring. So who has the edge? Who will be the Opening Day starter at second base for the White Sox?
Chris Getz
Getz is considered to be the odds on, early favorite to win the job. He is not overly impressive but is considered to be a good all-around ballplayer. Gone are the days when solid players like Getz were passed over for a weak-fielding, 20 HR player. Now guys like Getz are making a comeback into the Major Leagues.
It is unlikely that Getz is a .300 hitter at the Major League level and definitely does not come close to that this year. In a full season at the Major League level, Getz hits around .270 with 10 HR and 10 SB.
MLB Comparison: Akinori Iwamura Brent Lillibridge Lillibridge is a formerly highly-touted prospect in the Braves' organization that came to the White Sox in the Javier Vazquez deal. He is not going to hit for power at all but has great stolen base potential. However, he has yet to show the speed to get on base consistently. Lillibridge disappointed in his first shot in the Majors, hitting only .200 in 80 AB with the Braves last year. If he can improve his OBP he has 25 SB potential.
Lillibridge has the potential to be an everyday player in the Majors but he is not quite ready yet. It is also unlikely that he is a double-digit home run hitter at the Major League level. It may be to his benefit to start the season in Triple-A to continue his progression. MLB Comparison: Jerry Hairston Jr.
Jayson Nix
Nix was the Opening Day starter at second base for the Colorado Rockies last year but it wasn’t long before he found himself back in the Minors. He then became expendable with Ian Stewart and Clint Barmes having solid seasons. The Rockies were high on him and White Sox GM Kenny Williams is making a living feeding off of the leftovers of other teams. Nix has the potential to be a 15 HR hitter but has done nothing at the Major League level to earn a job.
Nix has shown the ability to be a 20/20 man in the Minors but time is running out for him to prove that he can do it in the Majors. The numbers above were accumulated after his demotion last season. He has two seasons in the Minors in which he stole over 20 bases. He is still an intriguing player that deserves a fair shot at a starting job.

Gordon Beckham
The White Sox’s first round draft pick in 2008 (8th overall), Beckham is quickly wowing many people with his ability and his character. He has been described as a line-drive hitter with above-average power. The big question is- how will his numbers translate to the Major League level?
It would not be a surprise if he is a consistent .300 hitter in the Majors. But can he hit for power as well? He should be able to provide above-average pop for a second baseman and add double-digit steals as well. Given that the most games that he has played in a season is 70, it may be best for him to play a full season in the Minors before joining the White Sox in 2010.

Analysis
None of these players are proven at the Major League level as of yet. Chris Getz is the current favorite to win the job. But the White Sox are looking for his backup as well. Should we flip a coin? Lillibridge and Nix have both had an opportunity in the Majors but both disappointed. It will come down to who has the best Spring Training. Getz and Lillibridge are currently hitting over .300 right now while Nix has not played much at all.
What would have seemed to be a big long-shot, Gordon Beckham may have a chance to break camp with the team when Spring Training wraps up. Beckham is impressing everyone this Spring, hitting over .360 with a couple of home runs as well. The original plan was to let the other three battle it out while Beckham gets some seasoning in the Minors. However, Beckham’s play thus far is making Ozzie Guillen reconsider.
In an article in the March 9 edition of the Chicago Tribune, Guillen is quoted as saying, “It seems like he belongs in the big leagues.” When asked if Beckham has a shot of making the team, Guillen said, “He's had a great spring training, and he's making it tougher on us to make that decision. If he continues to do that, then we have to think about what we're going to do."
Guillen wants players who can perform on his team. It is not unprecedented for a player to go straight from college to the Majors but it is unique. If he does make the roster then it would most likely be a platoon with Beckham on one of the other three for at least the first month or so.
Beckham has the most upside out of all the potential second basemen. So as fantasy players we are hoping he makes the team. But the White Sox also have to think of Beckham’s long-term future as well and a full season in the minors could be the best thing for him. Getz still appears to be the favorite but there are still a lot of Spring Training games left. Watch this situation closely.

I agree Kev. I still think Getz is the favorite but Beckham is certainly making the charge. He is showing that he can compete in the Majors but a year in the Minors would be to his benefit. It's still exciting to see.

Chris-
Great article, one I was considering writing for the coming weekend. There sure has been a lot of hype over Beckham during ST in the Chicagoland area. I'm still trying to decide if I think that he can make the team, but I'm leaning towards him going to AAA to give the other guys a shot first. I'd rather have him get more at-bats in AAA and then come up if there is a need for him. Write comment
