You don't want to miss out on all this great information. With 10 writers on the Premium Side, there is information for everyone. Here's a sneak peek of what you can expect when you sign up for the Premium Package. A look at our 1B Player Analysis : Carlos Delgado – Those that think scouting is an exact science should take heed of the scouting reports that Delgado could no longer catch up with high fastballs. Such reports were common in May, right before he took off. Scouting is no more of an exact science than psychology or economics. In just 251 AB’s after the All-Star Break he hit .303 with 21 HR and 63 RBI. It really isn’t a surprise that he played better after the break as that has been his track record the past few seasons with the Mets, but the scope of his resurgence caused people to take notice. Can we expect a repeat in ’09? At 37-years old we say emphatically no. Bet on him playing closer to his ’07 numbers (.258, 34 HR, 87 RBI) then his ’08 and with less home runs to boot. Carlos Pena - Contact rates can be a big fly in the ointment for power hitters. Pena is a case in point. His 955 OPS in the second half points to a resurgence in 2009 as he was bedeviled by poor luck in the first half. That is what happens when you strike out over 30% of the time; you can have tremendous streakiness. His power is fine though with a flyball rate over 50%. He can easily reach the $20 mark next year. Casey Kotchman - Collapsed upon joining the Braves as he hit only .237 with a .647 OPS after a .287 and .774 campaign for the Angels. He hits too many ground balls to ever be much of a HR threat, but could be hitting near .300 given his excellent contact rate but he needs to hit more line drives for that to happen. He is at a crossroads. Chad Tracy - How much playing time will he receive in 2009? His HR/F has declined for 3 straight years, making his 2005 27 HR outburst a distant memory. Even if he was assured full-time ABs, he’s no more than a bottom tier mixed league hitter but he could be a cheap risk though in NL-only leagues. Chris Davis - Forget what looks like a breakout performance, Davis is the second coming of Mark Reynolds. He strikes out a ton and hits it a ton when he makes contact. He has obvious hitting flaws when you watch him swing and it is hard to believe major league pitchers won’t be able to take advantage of him. He could end up as this generation’s Kevin Maas. His MLE’s show him to be a .260 type hitter that can strikeout 35% of the time. The .350 BABIP won’t be sustained. Ours is a minority opinion however. Chris Duncan - A herniated disk in his neck has apparently put his career in jeopardy. He was always a bit of an over-achiever. He walks a lot, strikes out a lot and can’t hit lefties. Monitor him in the spring. Conor Jackson - The increased power that his 2007 second half suggested was coming never materialized for a full season. A 6’2 215 pound 1st baseman should not be posting a 6.5% HR/F. He hits enough fly balls to hit 25-30 home runs, but nothing in his profile indicates an imminent power surge. Pay for the batting average and hope he decides to steal another 10 bases; everything else is gravy. Trackback(0)
