Premium Tease--Added and Dropped--Wieters, Crisp and More PDF  | Print |  E-mail
The Premium Tease
Written by Chuck Anderson
This week a 20-year-old pitcher and a 40-year-old outfielder are sharing space on the most added list.  If you are looking for some cheap speed you may be in luck.  Two outfielders with double digit steals are among the week's most dropped.

Added

Rick Porcello:  His inclusion in Detroit's rotation on Opening Day was met with some skepticism, but his month of May stacks up well against any pitcher.  He has won five straight starts with a 1.50 ERA in that span.  The Tigers are still closely monitoring his pitch counts, he has only gone over 90 once.  The ground ball skills he showed in the minors are translating well; at 54% he is ninth among starters.  At 5.57 K/9 he is not an asset in that category.  His .255 BABIP against and 79% strand rate suggest the recent results are somewhat beyond his current abilities.

Drop for him:  Brett Myers, Ricky Romero, Andy Sonnanstine
Don't drop:  John Maine, David Price, Ryan Dempster

Luke Scott:  In five games since being activated he is 8 for 18 with 7 runs, 6 HR, and 14 RBI.  Owners who plugged him in immediately are beaming from ear to ear.  He will continue to be a good source of cheap power, in 2008 he hit 23 HR in 475 AB.  His walk rate and GB/FB ratio are near career levels.  His average will likely be down at least 40 points from its current .325 by the end of the year.

Drop for him:  Colby Rasmus, Nick Swisher, Chase Headley
Don't drop:  Denard Span, Shin-Soo Choo, Jayson Werth

Gary Sheffield:  Over the past 30 days he has been filling all the statistical categories.  His May numbers:  .355 AVG, 20 R, 4 HR, 15 RBI, 2 SB.  Since Carlos Delgado's injury the Mets have batted him fourth.  At 40 years old, long term exposure to the outfield is a health risk, but New York will give him days off whenever possible.

Drop for him:  Jeff Francoeur, JD Drew, Pat Burrell
Don't drop:  Mike Cameron, Adam Lind, Corey Hart

Matt Wieters:  This is a sad commentary on how shallow the 10-team single catcher standard ESPN league is.  Wieters will improve the Baltimore offense that is already 11th in runs and 12th in OPS with Gregg Zaun as the catcher.  Prediction time, from here on out Wieters will be:

Better than:  Chris Iannetta, Jorge Posada, Bengie Molina
Not better than:  Victor Martinez, Russell Martin, Joe Mauer

Dropped

Coco Crisp:  Despite 29 runs scored and 11 steals, his .233 average is hurting owners.  He missed most of last week with shoulder soreness.  Crisp does not have a strong history of bouncing back from injuries, as a broken finger apparently nagged him for three seasons.  If heath is not an issue his stats show reason for hope.  He is walking at a career high pace (14.2%) and his .248 BABIP should move towards his .309 career number.

Drop him for:  Magglio Ordonez, Willy Taveras, Andre Ethier
Don't drop him for:  Ben Francisco, Fred Lewis, Chris Young

Nyger Morgan:  A waiver wire wonder in April, May has brought a .245 AVG including a .166 stretch in his last 36 at bats.  He has also been thrown out in three of his past seven steal attempts.  A BABIP of .340 suggests he may not have bottomed out.  Andrew McCutchen is waiting in AAA should Pittsburgh deem a benching necessary.

Drop him for:  Coco Crisp, Randy Winn, Dexter Fowler
Don't drop him for:  Carlos Gomez, Delmon Young, Melky Cabrera

Brad Ziegler:  While there has been no official announcement out of Oakland, all indications are that Andrew Bailey is the preferred closer.  In most leagues there is little demand for a 5.66 K/9 middle reliever unless his ratios are otherworldly. Ziegler's 1.69 WHIP is a hindrance, so look for other alternatives.

Drop him for:  Dan Wheeler, Andrew Bailey, Rafael Soriano
Don't drop him for:  CJ Wilson, Juan Cruz, John Grabow

Kosuke Fukudome:  His playing time has been spotty recently as the Cubs have faced a pack of left-handed starters.  His production is down in May, but he is still hitting .281 for the month and taking walks as well as anyone.  He is the #41 outfielder on ESPN's Player Rater.

Drop him for:  Jason Kubel, Ryan Ludwick, Nelson Cruz
Don't drop him for:  Scott Hairston, Jeremy Hermida, Marlon Byrd
