Roaming The Outfield
Written by Sean
We finally have had some spring training and WBC games to start reporting on the Outfield position.  Here is our first report for the second week of March 2009. Who’s Hot

Corey Hart is off to a nice start with a few home runs and high batting average.

Jason Lane is signed to a minor league contract and despite the hot spring still might not make the major league club.

Wladimir Balentien had two home runs in three days after a delayed start due to visa issues.  He still will not get much playing time due to Ken Griffey Jr.'s signing.

Brett Gardner has hit two home runs and a plus .400 batting average making him a leading candidate for centerfield job, but I keep hearing from everyone else that he can not hit at the major league level.

Jonny Gomes is looking good but the crowded Reds' outfield means he is  probably still relegated to being a back-up.

Coco Crisp has the starting gig and is off to a great start and hitting with confidence.

Jeremy Hermida is off to a hot start batting over .300 with a few homers.

Adam Dunn has two home runs in the WBC and an OPS of over 3.000 after the first two games.

Injuries

Brandon Moss
, Pittsburgh Pirates, injured his right thumb making a diving catch last Saturday, but should be able to play on Opening Day.  X-rays and an MRI on Monday revealed a significant contusion and mild sprain.

Garret Anderson, Atlanta Braves, strained his right calf during pregame warm-ups last Friday.  Manager Bobby Cox is hopeful Anderson will miss only a few games.

Brad Hawpe, Colorado Rockies, injured his finger on Friday while sliding into second base, needing four stitches to close a wound on his left pinkie. He is expected to be out five to seven days.

J.D. Drew, Red Sox, flew back to Boston and received an injection in his lower back on March 5th.
