Have you ever been baking cookies before and checked on them to find out that they weren’t done yet, but upon your arrival a few minutes later, they are beyond done? In fact, they were so burnt that they were inedible. I know it’s a poor analogy, but that’s how I feel right now with all of the latest free agent signings today. I had the column done, reporting that Abreu and Looper would both sign soon, and Dunn was likely going to the Nationals. Either way, here is the latest:
- Tom Glavine and the Atlanta Braves are still negotiating a one year deal that will be mainly incentives. As of right now, the deal is worth about $1-2 million and there are $1 million incentives for making the Opening Day roster, and another for remaining on the team 60 days into the season. Glavine wants more appearance based incentives, but it doesn’t appear that he has many other options besides the Braves. Expect him to sign within the next couple of days.
- Steroids have gotten a lot of attention in the past week and by now I’m sure that you are aware of everything that has been going on, but one article that I want to point out was published on Newsday.com is questioning whether A-Rod is really off steroids.
- Rumors are still swirling that the Royals are looking into acquiring another free agent by Opening Day, which could include Orlando Hudson and Orlando Cabrera. Various reports have continued to state that the Royals are reluctant to give up their second round pick in order to acquire one of these middle infielders however.
- Chances are increasing every day that Jake Peavy will be a Padre on Opening Day, however, there is no reason for them to keep him through the Trade Deadline. Roy Halladay is another stud pitching candidate to be traded by the trade deadline.
- It looks like Conor Jackson will be starting in left field for the D-Backs and Chad Tracy will man first base, which makes Eric Byrnes the fourth outfielder. There are a few platoon possibilities available, but it should make fantasy owners hesitant to grab Byrnes.
- The Providence Journal is all about health in the past 24 hours apparently reporting that Tim Wakefield is “slimmer” and Josh Beckett is “trimmer”.
- Joel Zumaya is excited for Spring Training when he believes he will be competing for the closer role, however, it still remains likely that Brandon Lyon will get the job. There’s a reason that the Tigers signed him, and Fernando Rodney also remains an option.
- Will Ohman will likely make a decision in the next 24 hours on where he will sign for 2009; the Braves, Phillies, and Mets are possible suitors as well as a mystery team or two.
- Kosuke Fukudome has apparently shaped up this offseason and will be playing for Japan in the World Baseball Classic which certainly doesn’t help his chances of getting regular playing time for the Cubs. What an awful feeling Jim Hendry must have about that signing a year later.
That’s about it for this week since a certain few players have decided to steal my rumor thunder, but I’m still interested to hear what you have to say about Manny Ramirez and the recent signings of Adam Dunn, Braden Looper, and Bobby Abreu. Feel free to leave a comment below and be sure to check out the Fantasy Baseball for Beginners column, which I will be writing every week on Wednesdays.

I'm not sure about 25+ home runs; that hasn't occurred since 2004, but he should bring a consistent bat; he has played in at least 150 games each year since 1998.
