Spring Training Update (Rumor Central) PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Rumor Central
Written by Kevin Orris
Now that the drama has settled and most of the free agents have found a home, the rumors are scarce; however, this column is not!  This column is full of great articles on the latest spring training successes, failures, and injuries.  It is very important to keep tabs on players during spring training to get a rough idea of how they will perform and what injuries they may already be facing.
Injury News

-Max Scherzer received a cortisone shot in January to help with right-shoulder inflammation and ever since he’s claimed to be okay.  It is never good when a pitcher publically announces an injury before the season starts, so keep an eye out for him, cortisone or not.

-Dodgers brand new second baseman Orlando Hudson was scratched from the lineup yesterday due to a sore wrist.  He underwent wrist surgery last August, so keep an eye on him in the coming weeks to see how he reacts.

-Kelvim Escobar is reportedly “pleased with his progression from shoulder surgery,” throwing a bunch of fastballs in the bullpen yesterday.  It is hard to predict a set date for his return since he is ahead of schedule.

-Nick Blackburn missed his start after his surgically repaired knee was acting up with soreness.  This is the first mention of this issue with Blackburn this spring so it is something to keep tabs on in the coming weeks.

-Tom Glavine arrived at Braves camp yesterday, however, so did his sore left shoulder.  It appears that Tommy Hanson may be closer to the big leagues than we think.

-Joe Saunders made his first spring appearance yesterday and reported no shoulder soreness; two weeks ago his debut was pushed back because of this issue.

-Johan Santana appears to be back on track for Opening Day, however, things can change very quickly.  It’s too early to make a judgment on this injury, so stay tuned.

-Troy Percival threw batting practice yesterday, and by that I mean he actually threw batting practice (no word on how effective he was).

-Kerry Wood also threw batting practice yesterday and has reported no back problems; there’s plenty of time for him to get injured still.

-Joe Mauer has suffered a “small” setback in his return from kidney surgery.  The Twins will continue to be cautious with him; however, he has already hit a few balls and caught a few times in practice.

-Doug Waechter is suffering from a blister problem already; he has little to no fantasy value regardless.

-Adam Miller is being shut down after experiencing soreness in a surgically repaired right middle finger that he noticed in a bullpen session about a week ago.

-Milton Bradley returned from injury yesterday and was able to get his first hit in a Cubs uniform, however left the game early after suffering tightness in his right quad.

-Justin Duchscherer may miss his Opening Day start because of elbow pain- this is not a good sign.  Dana Eveland is now slated to be the Opening Day starter.

Recent Success

I came across a lot of articles that have surfaced in the past 24 hours about players that have stood out lately in games so I thought that I would share them with you.

-The Twins are saying that Francisco Liriano’s delivery has improved in efforts to try to eliminate his mechanical flaws which could eventually cut his career short.

-Tommy Hanson has been exciting baseball fans across the globe since his Arizona Fall League dominance, and has continued to do so thus far in spring training.  Hanson will likely start the season in AAA, but will certainly be called up at some point in time in 2009.

-Andre Ethier hit his first home run of the spring yesterday - the Manny effect is already underway.

-Koji Uehara has been impressing the Oriole’s coaching staff with his control so far, throwing 23 of 26 pitches for strikes yesterday.

-Pablo Sandoval must love hitting on Wednesdays, because once again he has hit a home run the day I write my column.

-Scott Shields was named the Tampa Bay Rays Opening Day starter by manager Joe Maddon yesterday.  Maddon said, “Any one of the five starters could be No. 1. It's a tough decision for the guys up top.”

-Josh Johnson pitched four innings for the Marlins yesterday only allowing one run and three base runners.  He is currently campaigning to be the Marlins ace this year, and could have solid fantasy value.

Other Articles

Here’s a few articles about guys recently getting roughed up, as well as some interesting articles that I’ve come across in the past 24 hours.

-Cam Inman feels that it’s time for the San Francisco Giants to once again sign slugger Barry Bonds.  No comment.

-Shin-Soo Choo is waiting on the Indians to make a decision for him whether he will play in the WBC, which started early this morning.

-Mike Rizzo will be running the major league baseball operations for the Washington Nationals after former GM Jim Bowden stepped down (as we had assumed he would).

-Twins beat writer Kelly Thesier fielded questions yesterday about all sorts of Twins’ related things including the outfield.

-Brandon Webb got lit up against Mexico yesterday in his first spring training appearance, after missing his first scheduled one with forearm tightness.

That wraps it up for this week- I encourage you to leave a comment with your thoughts on the WBC and ST thus far.  I’ll be updating the comments section with more interesting articles as the week goes on.

I bet you this steroid thing is the main reason he is opting for surgery...he' too much of a coward to face the fans.
