Trade Deadline Predictions - Hitters PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Rumor Central
Written by Kevin Orris
In the past few weeks we’ve really gotten into the heart of some good rumors, although none have gone through yet (and won’t until at least a month from now) but injuries are really starting to affect the trade market.  Originally we thought that multiple solid hitters would be on the block including Juan Pierre, J.J. Hardy, Mark DeRosa, Paul Konerko, Jermaine Dye, and Matt Holliday.

The trade deadline is always important in fantasy leagues because of park factors, players moving from the NL to the AL (or vice-versa), and many other factors that add up.  Each of the previously mentioned hitters has been in multiple trade rumors so far this season, so here is the latest on each of them.

Juan Pierre (Dodgers): With the return of Manny Ramirez on the horizon, Pierre is very likely to lose his starting spot in the outfield.  It appears that Joe Torre is prepared to have Pierre play a couple games a week for Matt Kemp in the outfield, but otherwise his playing time will be very limited.  While he’s been a great asset to the Dodgers during Manny absence, his presence isn’t nearly as strong on the bench.  Although it would make sense to deal him for a pitcher, the Dodgers continue to deny that it will happen.  It is UNLIKELY for Pierre to be traded at the deadline because GM Ned Colletti continues to stand up for Pierre and boast about his impact on the team.  His large contract doesn’t help either.

J.J. Hardy (Brewers): All signs show that the Milwaukee Brewers will trade Hardy this season, most likely for a pitcher.  The bullpen has been one of the best so far, but the starting rotation is a different story.  The rotation hasn’t been awful, but with Manny Parra performing well below expectations and Dave Bush heading the DL has really made a dent.  Slick fielding shortstop Alcides Escobar is waiting in Triple-A Nashville to be called up and make an immediate impact at the top of the lineup as a speedster.  It is HIGHLY LIKELY that Hardy is traded in 2009.

Mark DeRosa
(Indians): The former Chicago Cub may be headed back to Chi-town in the next month due to the Cubs lack of hitting and leadership.  DeRosa’s bat has been dearly missed on the North Side of the Windy City, and fans are dying for his return.  The Cubs however, are stuck in a financial crisis with a transition into a new ownership regime that will prevent them from making any big moves.  The Cardinals, Mets, Yankees, and Marlins have also been mentioned in rumors, and could really use his defensive versatility.  With the Indians in the cellar, it appears that DeRosa WILL BE DEALT in 2009.

Paul Konerko/Jermaine Dye (White Sox): Both of these White Sox have been mentioned in various rumors this season thanks to their expiring contracts come October.  The team appears to be headed into rebuilding mode, and have called up almost all of their best prospects in the 2009 season thus far.  GM Kenny Williams has publically denied that the team will be active at the deadline, but is not ruling the out the possibility of one of these sluggers being traded.  It is LIKELY that one of these two are traded at the deadline, but it’s too early to tell which one it will be.  It is unlikely for Dye to be moved if Carlos Quentin is forced to remain out past the deadline.

Matt Holliday
(Athletics): The Oakland A’s are trying to play it like they’re going to hold onto Holliday, but we’ve all seen what their management style has done to him this year… kill his value!  He hasn’t been able to produce in Oakland and his big salary can’t possibly be appealing to their front office.  It would make all of the sense in the world to trade Holliday to acquire some offensive help to accommodate their young pitching staff.  If Billy Beane has half of a brain, he will LIKELY deal Holliday at the deadline.

Which of these pitchers do you feel is the most likely to be dealt this year?  Who will the biggest name dealt at the deadline?
