Waiver Wire Finds PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Behind The Plate Blog
Written by Ryan Campbell
It is the time of year when summer begins and injuries begin to take their toll on fantasy lineups. It is also the point where you begin to give up on some guys who just cannot seem to put it together. Let us take a look at some capable fill-ins you can often find on the waiver wire.
C – Jarrod Saltalamacchia : Pickings are pretty slim at catcher in twelve team leagues, and Salty is probably your best bet. He is still young and his .248 average will not kill you. His counting stats are just as good as Geovany Soto’s or Russell Martin’s, so if you have the roster space he might be worth a shot in a platoon situation.
1B – Lyle Overbay: As usual, first base is pretty deep this year, but injuries do happen. If you have an injury or were the guy that drafted Chris Davis (yeah, me too), Overbay is an adequate replacement. His .264 average leaves a little to be desired and his nine home runs are not exactly prolific, but he is a very consistent bat and has 41 RBI. He is also only owned in 10% of Yahoo! leagues so he should be available.
2B Second base is surprisingly deep this year. Anyone of value is owned, and I do not really know why anyone would use a second baseman in their utility spot.
3B- Andy LaRoche: LaRoche is owned in only 7% of leagues, but he will give you runs and RBI if that is what you are looking for. If you are searching for some power, Joe Crede or Kevin Kouzmanoff are better options, but make sure their batting averages do not sink you.
SS – Elvis Andrus: Andrus put himself on the radar this week by stealing four bases in one game. He is young and improving, and his 15 SB could help spark your team. With many managers getting next to no production from their shortstops (Jimmy Rollins, Jose Reyes, Rafael Furcal, Stephen Drew, JJ Hardy), Andrus is a good alternative.
OF – Colby Rasmus: After a slow start, Rasmus is starting to turn it on. He is finally living up to the billing that made him the top prospect in the Cardinals' organization. He does not stand out in any single category, but he is consistent across the board other than stolen bases. Expect an improved second half.
